The Philosophy

I Play, Therefore I Am

Toyism is not an art movement in the traditional sense, but a philosophy of existence, wrapped in colour and imagination. It is a worldview that regards art not as an expression of ego but as a playful means to question and reshape reality.

The Emergence of Toyism

The development of an artistic movement rarely follows a linear birth; it arises from a complex interplay of inheritance and rejection, as a response and complement to prevailing cultural paradigms. Toyism did not find its raison d'être in a vacuum, but in a conscious rejection of the dominant ego-era, which had ruled the art world for decades and elevated the individual to the ultimate standard. This collective liberation from a creative space conditioned by individualism became the primary catalyst for a new artistic path.

Play as the Origin of Culture

Inspired by Johan Huizinga's Homo Ludens (1938), Toyism regards play as a fundamental creative force — not pastime, but the engine of civilisation. The movement's motto inverts Descartes: "I play, therefore I am." While reason sits at the centre of Cartesian thinking, Toyism chooses imagination, intuition, and the joy of the unexpected.

Anonymity as Liberation

In an era when the artist is often more important than the art, Toyism chooses the opposite. Toyists work under pseudonyms and wear masks whenever filmed or photographed — not to hide, but to make room for the art itself. The mask is not a disguise but a revelation: the viewer is invited to look only at the work.

Collectivity over Individualism

Toyism is not a collection of solitary geniuses but a collective with a shared vision — a reaction to the ego-era in art. In Toyism, the artist is a servant of the work, not the other way round. The collective is not a restriction but a liberation: within the manifesto's framework, individual voices can be heard without the whole fragmenting.

The Manifesto "Mother" as a Compass

The manifesto of Toyism is called "Mother" — not a dogmatic prescription but a living compass that outlines the movement's core values. It offers a playing field with clear rules, so that creativity within that field can flourish to the fullest. Those who follow the rules discover that boundaries do not limit but inspire.

Mother Manifesto — How Does It Work?

The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect, but by the play instinct. Play is the exultation of the possible and the beginning of knowledge. By play, we are, we learn, we become. Ludo Ergo Sum — I play, therefore I am.

In Toyism the manifesto is called Mother. Everyone comes from a mother — Mother is the base, and with her palette of stylistic features she always represents an important part in every work of art. There is always DNA of Mother in the works. But a mother without a partner results in no work of art. Mother has a relationship with a Partner — a man, woman, or non-binary person — who provides the other half of the DNA. The children from this relationship are the works of art in the style of Toyism.

The artworks therefore always carry the qualities of Mother (similarities) and the Partner (differences). Each Partner has its own views and characteristics that mix with Mother's qualities. Because of this, all Children are strongly linked — yet the differences between them always come from the Partner.

Connection, Wonder, Resilience

What drives this philosophy? Toyism holds that art is more than aesthetics — it is an instrument of connection between people, between cultures, and between dream and reality. In a world that is becoming faster, louder, and more individualistic, Toyism offers a counterbalance: an invitation to play, to wonder, and to create together. The three core values of Toyism are connection, creativity, and resilience. They are not only themes in the artworks but also the experience the viewer is invited to undergo.

Toyism is the conviction that play is more serious than reality because it reshapes reality, and that art does not ask for a name but for a gaze.
